Rating – 5 Out of 5
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. Written for his own children, J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” is an adventurous journey of the Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit through middle-earth, trying to help the dwarves reclaim their treasure from the dragon the great. “The Hobbit”, recognised as a timeless classic is an extraordinary piece of creativity, surpassing wit of J.R.R. Tolkien.
Reviewing a book in which one finds at least one glitch is lot more easier than reviewing a flawless book. Recognised as sempiternal classic in itself, “The Hobbit” is an extraordinary work of J.R.R. Tolkien. It is an exemplar of the classic epic fantasy studded with utmost creativity, exceeding humour and only as-much-as-needed description of the fantasy world of middle-earth. J.R.R. Tolkien wrote this book for his own children, but it stands out to be the unsurpassable classic literature in today’s world indulging the readers of all ages.
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit…….A fantasy novel can not have a better start than this line. Author renders his fantasy middle-earth exceedingly well. The queer characters like Trolls, Goblins, Gollum, Elves etc. have been depicted awfully well. I wonder how did J.R.R. Tolkien think of so many different characters. It is not only about inserting these fantasy characters in the story but also their behaviour, relations with each other have been entangled extraordinarily. When Bilbo gets lost in a tunnel and wants to find the way out, he comes face to face with the Gollum, a nasty little creature. The Gollum only knows the way to get out of tunnel. He plays riddles with Bilbo, If Bilbo could solve the riddles then only he would see the way out. The riddles have been arranged precisely with rhyme. They are so intriguing and brain storming that we are left wondering, pondering, chewing over them trying to figure out the answers. It was sheer amusement.
J.R.R. Tolkien is such a witty author that he turns the conversation between Gandalf, the Wizard and Bilbo on a simple “Good Morning” into a complete one mirthful page. The conversation of the Bilbo Baggins and Smaug, the great dragon is undoubtedly the best. It is really entertaining to read that conversation. He has chosen the names of the dwarves as well in absolute rhyming viz. Kili and Fili, Dwalin and Balin etc. It yields lots and lots of humour throughout the adventure.
I just didn’t like the character of Bilbo Baggins at the beginning of the story. J.R.R. Tolkien develops this character in such a way that you can’t repulse the desire to adore it in the end. Bilbo Baggins stands out to be the hero by the time story ends. You ought to read this novel in order to find out “How”.
Rating & Conclusion
I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND this book to the reader of any age. “The Hobbit” has everything a reader expects from a book – Entertainment, Witty Dialogues, Fantasy World, Intriguing Riddles. I would rate this book 5 Stars Out Of 5. It is and would remain a timeless classic. The best fantasy novel of our time.
